1.Lap joint.

What is lap joint in welding ?

A welding joint is a point or edge where two or more pieces of metal or plastic are joined together. They are formed by welding two or more workpieces (metal or plastic) according to a particular geometry. There are five types of joints referred to by the American Welding Society: butt, corner, edge, lap, and tee.

What are lap joints used for?

Halving laps. Halving lap joints are used extensively in transition and cabinetry for framing. They are quick and easy to make and provide reasonable strength through good long grain to long grain gluing surface. The shoulders provide some resistance to racking (diagonal distortion)

Halving lap joints are used extensively in transition and cabinetry for framing. They are quick and easy to make and provide reasonable strength through good long grain to long grain gluing surface. The shoulders provide some resistance to racking (diagonal distortion).

Why is a lap called a lap?

Used as a noun, verb and adjective, most with several distinct meanings, lap is a prominent word in the English language         If you're wondering about the sense of a trip around

a track or the like, in the mid-1600s, one meaning of lap was something coiled up. By the mid- 1800s, this morphed into “laps” of a track.

What tools are used to make a lap joint?

Both can be cut in a bunch of ways. You can use a dado set or a tenoning jig on the tablesaw , you can rout them with a straight bit, or you can cut them with hand.

2.Butt welded joints

A Butt Weld is a circumferential butt welded joint, and the most common type of joint employed in the fabrication of welded pipe systems. A butt joint is the most universally used method of joining pipe to itself, fittings, flanges, Valves, and other equipment. This welding technique is widely applied in situations where a quality weld desired, and the weld by X-ray technically should be investigated.

Advantage of but welding joint

The Butt Joint. By far the easiest joint to create is the butt joint. This joint butts one piece of wood against another and relies upon wood glue to hold the pieces together. ...

Without the addition of stabilizers, you can easily break apart a butt joint using only your hands

Disadvantage of but welding joint

This joint butts one piece of wood against another and relies upon wood glue to hold the pieces together. End grain is joined to long grain in a weak configuration that must be reinforced with pins, plates or dowels for the connection to stand up to lateral pressure.

What is but welding joint

Butt welding is a commonly used technique in welding that can either be automated or done by hand on steel pieces. Butt welding can also be done with brazing for copper pieces. It is used to attach two pieces of metal together such as pipe, framework in factories, and also flanges. A flange is something that either is internal or external that provided to strengthen a piece of material. In factories butt welding has shown how economical it can be for companies to use when building things out of metal. This is because if they wanted to make something out of metal without welding it together they would have to bend everything and reinforce the structure which costs more than welding the two pieces together. Butt welding is accomplished by heating up two pieces of metal, or

applying pressure, or doing both of those. Penetration while welding the metal is important to maintain and with thin pieces of metal this is possible however, with thick pieces edge preparation may have to be done to prepare the metal. Full penetration butt welds are made when they are in the within the parent(bigger, stronger) metal. In butt welding the strongest welds will have the fewest imperfections. To achieve this the heat input is controlled, which decreases the size of the weld. In commercial welding when this is done it also reduces cost but in order to maintain the strength of the weld double butt welds will be used. In butt welding there are two types used to achieve the specific welds and then there are also a variety of joints considered to be butt joints.

Butt welding is best performed with MIG or TIG welding applications due to their natural ability to connect two pieces of metal together.

Using different types of welding electrodes for the welder will determine the properties of the weld such as its resistance against corrosion and strength. Electrodes conduct current through the metal being welded in order join the two pieces. The metal determines the type of welding that is required. The electrodes are either heavily or lightly coated. For the heavily coated electrodes are commonly used in structural welding because they are much stronger and corrosion resistant. The lightly coated electrodes are not as structurally sound.Butt welding is performed with the Arc, TIG, or MIG welder held at a slight angle the weld if the weld is laying flat in order to achieve the least amount of porosity in the weld and also to increase the weld's strength. Fillet welding make up about 80 percent of the connection despite being weaker that butt welds. The reason it is used more often is because fillet welds offer more room for error with much larger tolerances. Fillet welding is not a type of butt weld despite its similarities.

3.Corner joint

What is a corner joint in welding ?

Being one of the most popular welds in the sheet metal industry the Corner welding joint is used on the outer edge of the piece. This weld is a type of joint that comes together at right angles between two metal parts to form an L. These are common in the construction of boxes, box frames and similar fabrications.

4.Tig welding

It is also called as Gas Tungsten Are Welding (GTAW). It is an inert gas shielded are welding process.

Inert gases are used to keep contaminants away from metal surface.

The operation consists of an electric arc struck between a tungsten electrode and the workpiece. The tungsten electrode does not melt during welding.

So it is a non-consumable type electrode. A filler metal can be added separately. The argon gas is preferred as shielding gas for this process.

Advantages

i) No flux is required so slag free operation.

(ü) Different metal such as mild steel to stainless steel, brass to copper can be welded to each other.

No weld cleaning is required separately.

Filler metal need not pass through electric arc.

Limitations

The shielding gas and equipment cost, both are high.

Comparatively slow process and it needs separate filler metal.

Applications

Mostly used for aluminum, magnesium and stainless steel.

Thin sections upto 7 mm thickness.
